Wednesday 13 Rocks Winston-Salem

Earlier this year, when Wednesday 13 announced a tour celebrating his work with Murderdolls, we knew this would be an epic event. The tour finally kicked off on October 20th at The Whisky in Los Angeles and has been covering the entire country. On November 24th the tour hit up The Millennium Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Since Wednesday is originally from the area, this night was filled with anticipation, and the crowd filled with family, friends, and fans were absolutely ready for it.

It was actually a chilly night, but when we arrived at Millennium Center, there was a line of fans already eagerly awaiting the show well before doors opened. The line had already reached the next block and was only getting bigger. It was cool because I chatted with a few people outside that night who were not only excited about seeing Wednesday 13 again and hearing some old Murderdolls tunes played live, but they were equally as excited about the entire line-up set to play.

Black Satellite started out the night as they have for the entire tour. Black Satellite is from New York and features vocalist Larissa Vale and guitarist Kyle Hawken. They’ve spent the past few months on tour, including an opening spot for the recent Cradle of Filth and DevilDriver tour. In only a 30-minute set, they not only can get the crowd pumped but they create new fans all the while.

When Infected Rain hit the stage, they tore into “Fighter” off of 2022’s Ecdysis and people were immediately jumping. Vocalist Lena Scissorhands has an infectious way of giving all of her energy to the crowd and the crowd returning it right away. Millennium Center is a lovely event center that sometimes holds weddings, there are crystal chandeliers and beautiful surroundings. Infected Rain had a full circle pit going on up in the middle of this venue by the end of their set.

Gemini Syndrome is always a crowd favorite and the band hasn’t actually toured as extensively in 2023 as they usually do. They’ve released a couple of new singles lately including “Wake Up” and “Conquistador” and I was really looking forward to hearing those live for the first time. The band as usual did not disappoint and only left the crowd wanting to hear more.

While every band was incredible, Wednesday 13 was definitely the single reason everyone was here. The band played a full set list of Murderdolls tunes and it definitely made my little black heart *squee* with excitement. They played most of ‘Beyond the Valley of the Murderdolls’ It was a hell of a set honestly. They started out with “The World According To Revenge.” Between most songs during the set, Wednesday 13 threw in some anecdotes about the songs, the band, and their tours, which included a huge tour opening up for Iron Maiden. It was a great time for new and old fans alike.

Later in the set, the band would also dive into some songs from 2010’s ‘Women and Children Last.’ This album included Roman Surman, who is also currently part of Wednesday 13’s band. It also brought even more stories, a highlight was hearing about Mick Mars in the studio bleeding for “Blood Stained Valentine.”

When the band finally went off the stage after “Summertime Suicide,” the crowd was of course chanting “One more song!” Well, they were not disappointed when the band came back out after a short break to give them 3 more songs in fact. It included their cover of Billy Idol’s “White Wedding,” followed by Wednesday pulling out his umbrella for the favorite “I Love to Say Fuck” and the night ended on “Dead in Hollywood.” Wednesday 13 had said at the start of the show this would be a tribute to late drummers Joey Jordison and Ben Graves, and it was a fucking incredible tribute indeed.
