Black Cat feels like the Coolest Place in the World

Suki Waterhouse sells out local DC venue; second trip to the Nation’s Capital in Last Six Months

It was a little over an hour till showtime, and the line at Black Cat was wrapped around the block.  Fans of Suki Waterhouse turned out in droves for her Washington, DC stop on her headlining Coolest Place in the World tour, selling out the dimly-lit DC nightclub, with support from LA-based Blondshell.

Waterhouse, a British native, has spent the last decade as a model and actress.  She’s been releasing music since 2017 and seems to have ratcheted up her focus in the post-pandemic years.  This was her second time in the DC area in the last six months, after supporting Father John Misty on his Chloë and the Next 20th Century tour in September 2022.  Since then, she’s released a six-track EP Milk Teeth, (her second music release of the year), and kicked off her Coolest Place in the World tour; a reference to one of the EP’s tracks of the same name.

Fans crowded the stage as Suki entered the stage, with bright lights on and fans blowing. Her professional stage lighting was a noticeable and pleasant departure from the typically dim, magenta venue.  She opened with “Bullshit on the Internet” and played a number of songs from her early 2022 album I Can’t Let Go as well as ones from the more recent “Milk Teeth” like “Neon Sign” and appropriately timed “Valentine.”

The packed crowd chanted the catchy and singable lyrics of “Coolest Place in the World,” and she ended the night with her “Good Looking,” a fan favorite that went viral on TikTok late last year.

Supporting Suki Waterhouse was up-and-coming, indie/alternative Blondshell, who’s been on the road for most of the tour.  She played a number of originals, including “Veronica Mars,” “Sepsis,” and the newly dropped “Joiner.” All of these are set to release as a collective later this year in her first, self-titled album.  Later in the set, she asked the crowd about playing a song by the Cranberries, and after a resounding approval, she went in on a cover of “Disappointment” by the group.

Suki Waterhouse and Blondshell finish up their Coolest Place in the World Tour in LA on February 11th, just in time for the spring/summer festival season.  She’ll support international Lollapalooza stops, before coming back to the US for Shaky Knees, Governors Ball, Bonnaroo, and possibly others as they’re announced.  Blondshell makes her way to SXSW in Austin later in March, just before the release of her first album, expected on April 7, 2023, on Partisan Records. Then, she heads out on a number of European dates in May.
