Mary J. Blige Does It For The Fans

The Queen of R&B Dazzles At Spectrum Center

Legendary singer Mary J. Blige is a true musical icon. Born in the Bronx, the birthplace of Hip-Hop, Blige is credited as being the first to blend the genres of R&B and Hip-Hop, earning her the title of not only the Queen of R&B but also the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul.

So, “What’s the 411” on Mary? Her list of awards and accolades is a mile long, with 9 Grammy Awards, a Primetime Emmy, and the Billboard Icon Award, to name just a few. Four of her albums reached the top of the Billboard 200 chart, and the single “Family Affair” landed her the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100. In addition to her musical career, Mary J. is also a successful actress, songwriter, and entrepreneur.

Fun Fact: A demo tape she recorded inside a karaoke booth at her local mall got her discovered.

Mary J. Blige is currently out on tour, bringing her incredible live set to cities around the country on the For The Fans Tour. Luckily for Charlotte area fans, Blige recently stopped in at Spectrum Center, giving a performance worthy of her stellar reputation.

Fans

Fun Fact: She was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in the film “Mudbound”.

The show is truly “For The Fans,” with the experience bringing the crowd together to celebrate the musical legacy of Mary. Everything was centered around giving the fans the ultimate concert experience. In addition to the main stage, there was a smaller stage set up at the other end of the venue floor. Surrounding this stage was a VIP fan area with plush, fuzzy couches, cocktail tables, and lucky fans who were absolutely having the time of their lives. Everyone was dancing and singing along to the music, anticipating Mary J.’s appearance.

I absolutely love it when an artist utilizes the entire arena to connect and get closer to the fans with an additional stage. Mary J. was perfection as she interacted with the fans on each side of the stage, reaching down with her black silk gloves to touch the hands of lucky fans as she serenaded them.

Fun Fact: Her middle name “J” stands for “Jane,” after her paternal grandmother.

So far, the show was off to an incredible start, and it was about to get even better. A huge golden ring came down from the ceiling as Mary J. stepped onto it and was raised up above the small stage, ascending higher and higher as she glided across the floor all the way back to the main stage as everyone looked skyward in awe and amazement.

Fun Fact: She has launched her own perfume, “My Life,” and a line of sunglasses called “Melody”.

Once back at the main stage, the For The Fans Tour took off to an explosive start. After disappearing for a costume change, Mary J. made her way back onto the stage, surrounded by a bevy of talented dancers with everything from massive cryo plumes to dazzling lights as she ran through a setlist of over 30 songs.

Highlights included audience sing-alongs and poignant stories that Mary shared with everyone throughout the evening. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Mary J. Blige show without hearing “Mary’s Joint” and “No More Drama.” Ms. Blige saved the piece de resistance for last, closing out this fantastic night of music with “Family Affair,” which felt right not only because it is her biggest hit but because for this one night we all felt like a part of Mary’s family.

Fun Fact: She drew inspiration for “No More Drama” from the soap opera “The Young and the Restless”.

There’s still a little time to catch the tour before it heads overseas for a run of dates. Don’t miss your chance to catch the Queen in action.
