An Electric Night in Charlotte with Chevelle, Asking Alexandria, & Dead Poet Society

Opening acts charged up the crowd before lightning cut Chevelle’s stormy set short.

Summer may be winding down and school is back in full swing, but Charlotte’s outdoor concert season is still thriving. On Thursday night, the Skyla Credit Union Amphitheater buzzed with excitement as rock fans gathered for a night of heavy music while Chevelle and company were in town.

Loeffler brothers Pete and Sam, along with bassist Kemble Walters hit the road last month in support of their brand new tenth studio album Bright As Blasphemy, bringing English metalcore veterans Asking Alexandria and standout indie rockers Dead Poet Society along for the ride.

The late summer afternoon weather started out perfect as the line of concertgoers stretched down the block and fans of all ages eagerly made their way into the venue. A light breeze cut through the lingering heat of the day, carrying with it that electric anticipation that only comes before a big show. The hum of chatter, shuffle of merch bags, and the clinking of beer cups filled the air.

Kicking off the evening we have Dead Poet Society. I’ll admit upfront, I’m a big fan of these guys, and even though this is my first time catching them live, I already knew they were going to deliver. Still touring in support of their January 2024 release FISSION, the foursome from Boston powered through a short but intense seven-song set, making the most of their tighter time slot.

There’s something special about seeing a band you love win over a crowd that might not be familiar with them. From the moment they stepped on stage and broke into “.intoodeep.” front man Jack Underkofler’s soaring vocals demanded attention.

Pouring raw emotion into every note, you could feel the audience gradually lean in closer, caught up in the intensity.

As their set progressed, the skies began to cloud up, a subtle shift that hinted the weather might play a role in the night ahead. Closing with “HURT” (my favorite track by them) felt like the perfect exclamation point to the end of their set.

These guys have so much potential to be huge, and I have no doubt they walked away with a slew of new fans. I look forward to seeing what they do next.

Following the fantastic set from DPS, Asking Alexandria stormed the stage with fierce energy that got the amphitheater moving and hands raised high.

The crowd’s energy shifted from curious engagement to full-on chaos with crowd surfers sailing overhead and voices roaring along. A brief light drizzle began to fall, but instead of dampening the mood, it only added to it.

Rocking a pair of cowboy boots, frontman Danny Worsnop unleashed gritty screams and soulful cleans, while the band behind him delivered heavy riffs and breakdowns that have kept them a staple in the scene for over a decade.

Their set was a well-balanced blend of old favorites and more recent material, giving longtime fans a healthy mix of nostalgia while spotlighting how far the band has come.

Songs like “Alone in a Room” and their explosive closer “The Final Episode (Let’s Change the Channel)” shook the amphitheater with massive singalongs.

It was a crowd-pleasing performance that kept everyone on their feet and primed the audience perfectly for the headliner’s arrival.

As the storm clouds continued to roll in, Chevelle took the stage to a thunderous applause, launching straight into “Family System” off of their 2002 album Wonder What’s Next. For me, that moment carried an extra layer of nostalgia.

The last time I saw them live I was only 16 years old. While I’m a bit reluctant to admit how long ago that was, it’s been a whopping 20 years.

Hearing those first riffs from both my early days and theirs ringing through the amphitheater instantly brought back that same teenage rush, only magnified by thousands of fans singing along and crowd surfers continuously rolling overhead.

Unfortunately, soon after they hit the stage nearby lightning from the looming storm moving into the area brought the night to an abrupt halt.

After only three songs, “Family System,” “The Clincher,” and “An Island,” the show was postponed, and then later called off due to safety reasons. Chevelle gave it their all in that short window, but you could feel the disappointment ripple through the crowd as the announcement was being made.

Many of us were looking forward to hearing more familiar favorites and a few fresh tracks off Bright As Blasphemy, but the weather had other plans.

Still, in those brief moments, the Loeffler brothers reminded us why Chevelle’s music has endured for more than two decades. Even though it was cut short, their performance was powerful. A reminder that sometimes it’s not about how long a band plays, but the energy they leave behind.

For the Queen City, it was bittersweet. A night where the weather won, but Chevelle still made their mark. Hopefully next time they’re in town Mother Nature will cooperate. Catch them while they’re still on tour.
