Tears for Fears Still Rules The World at PNC Music Pavilion

The Tipping Point Tour Brings a Breathtaking Audio and Visual Show to Charlotte

It seems like only yesterday that we were all mesmerized by the synth-pop vibes of Tears for Fears’ debut album The Hurting. Alas, it’s been almost forty years since the English duo of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith smash hits topped the charts with songs like “Mad World,” “Shout,” and “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” The band is back with a brand new album this year The Tipping Point, their first in almost 18 years and fans that packed PNC Music Pavilion can attest to the fact that they most certainly haven’t lost a step.

Opening the show was none other than iconic alternative rockers Garbage. Fronted by lead vocalist Shirley Manson, Garbage hit the stage ready to perform. Clad in sunglasses and lime green leggings, Manson had the crowd’s attention from the very first notes of “Automatic Systematic Habit.” Her vocals were spot on and production specialist and drummer Butch Vig was a treat to behold behind the kit. No matter what, Garbage is always a fun time and they sounded amazing. Highlights of the set included top hits “Stupid Girl” and “Only Happy When It Rains” with a snippet of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” closing out their set during “You Look So Fine.”

I had seen photos of a few stops on the Tipping Point tour so I thought I knew what we were in for but I was totally unprepared for the beauty and majesty that we were about to behold. The back of the stage was set up with a huge screen that resembled a circular eye that changed imagery throughout the evening, matching the brilliant visuals to the uniqueness of each individual song.

Tears for Fears took the stage and began with “No Small Thing” from their latest album. Indeed the set would run heavy with new material, blending the newer songs in with the older hits seamlessly as an astonished audience watched and listened in amazement.

Both Orzabal and Smith sounded amazing as they traded vocals and harmonies all evening long backed by a band of world-class musicians. It was the kind of show that you had to just sit back and let it all soak in to fully appreciate. We danced, we cried, we laughed, we sang. But most of all, we made memories that would last a lifetime.
