Shutter 16 Presents: “This Far” Music Video Premiere From Pierce Alexander

Today we are pleased to announce the exclusive premiere of “This Far” music video from Charleston-based singer/songwriter Pierce Alexander. Pierce has been making his presence known in the music scene since his debut album The Minutehand earlier this year.

Musically, “This Far” has an energetic and playful feel yet tackles the complex subject of addiction which is expressed thoughtfully through Alexander’s lyrics, Will I find my feet again? After drinking all the days away…

Inspired by a friend’s struggle with substance abuse, Pierce shares his thoughts on the song.

“During the time this song was written, I watched a friend of mine go down a dark path,” says Alexander. “Even though I wanted to help, I felt kind of powerless in the situation because they had no desire to acknowledge the issue. The song came to me one afternoon, and when trying to understand their perspective, it felt natural to write the song from that point of view. It was a bit of an extreme way of coping but I wanted to see the situation from all angles. It helped me realize that you can influence someone to change, but sometimes you have to just be there for them, keeping them at arm’s length with the hope that eventually they will ‘find their feet again’.”

Directed by Jenna Desmond and filmed by Corey Campbell (Babe Club), the music video takes a creative, almost whimsical approach to the typical story of addiction. The main character, portrayed by Lainie Robertson, is enamored with a strange and curious disco ball figure. The storyline of the video represents the difficulties that people struggling with addiction often have in asking for help. Alexander explains, “We wanted the video to portray less of the struggle aspect, and more of a romanticized version of the truth. This Far is a song about not quite knowing how to step away from unhealthy coping mechanisms. The video portrays more of a romanticized version of this, where the main character is caught in the allure of her new life with the disco ball figure.”
