Philadelphia entered the Efferusphere with Big Wild & Biig Piig at Union Transfer
Producer Big Wild performed to a packed crowd at Union Transfer on Wednesday evening with support opener Biig Piig. Big Wild has been on the rise in the electronic music scene since his debut in 2017, and his long-awaited sophomore album, Efferusphere, was released just this past week. The album showcases a mix of genres from indie rock to psychedelic and brings along listeners for an all-encompassing, self-reflective journey.
Starting off the show was singer/rapper, Biig Piig. Biig Piig is a London-based artist who has been releasing music for the past six years, with her first single, “Vice City” having dropped when she was just a teenager. Her music is a mix of folk and indie pop, with a dash of electronica. She has been described as “ one of modern pop’s genuine one-offs, and a young woman who has come of age across a period of experimentation and self-evaluation.” Live, Big Piig’s set consisted of both old and new songs, including a few from her latest album, The Sky is Bleeding. From the smooth, jazzy notes of “Roses and Gold” to the poppy vibes of “Don’t Turn Around,” her vocals and soothing beats both captivated and entertained the audience.
Following Biig Piig was Big Wild. One of the most interesting aspects of Big Wild’s set was the use of live instrumentals to create an atmosphere that felt cinematic and powerful. This was not your average EDM act with strobe lights, lasers, and pyrotechnics. Big Wild’s instrumental background added an emotional depth to the music that made it feel more like a performance than just another standard producer set. Positioned high on the stage in front of his keyboard and backlit by his simple, yet tastefully done visuals, Big Wild greeted the sizable crowd before diving right into the opening chords of “OMGarden”, one of his earliest releases off of Efferusphere. Part electronica, part rock, and topped with a few poppy notes, Big Wild’s performance easily had the whole crowd singing and grooving along to his set. Notable tracks following “OMGarden” included “6’s to 9’s,” “Waiting Outside,” and “We could Share.”
Both Biig Piig and Big Wild put on great performances at Union Transfer that evening, and are currently still on the road for the Efferusphere tour.
