Perturbator, HEALTH, and Street Sects Take over TLA

Perturbator, HEALTH, and Street Sects transform Philly’s TLA into Industrial Paradise

Synthwave is a genre of electronic music that emerged in the 1980s and is characterized by the heavy use of synthesizers and drum machines to create captivating, analog sounds. Synthwave is often used as background music for video games, advertisements, and films. Live, this musical genre is as dark as it is dance-worthy, and this proved especially true for French Synth artist Perturbator for his live performance at Philadelphia’s Theater of Living Arts.

This tour stop was one of many North American dates scheduled to help promote his latest release, titled Lustful Sacraments. Supporting Perturbator on tour were fellow industrial/noise rock acts HEALTH and experimental group Street Sects.

Street Sects was the first opening band to kick off the evening. Street Sects is a noise rock band based out of Austin, Texas. The band was formed in 2013 and consists of vocalist Leo Ashline and multi-instrumentalist Shaun Ringsmuth.

Street Sects set was one that pushed heavy on the feedback and distortion. The band played their latest releases, including favorite tracks such as “X Amount” and “End Position,” as well as some of their older ways. Their raw and gritty approach to their live performance grabbed the attention of every attendee in the room, and the set’s intensity carried over to the second opener, L. A based band HEALTH.

HEALTH is a noise rock band from Los Angeles, California. The group was formed in 2004 by childhood friends Jake Duzsik and John Famiglietti. Live HEALTH showcased a perfect mix of haunting vocals layered with artfully crafted raw synth. The group featured both older songs and new releases from their upcoming album DISCO4, which also included a collaborative piece with the notable indie rock band The Neighborhood.

Finally, following HEALTH was Perturbator. It was a fantastic experience to see him perform live, and he captivated the audience throughout his entire set with his intricate melodies and distorted hooks. His energy never dissipated throughout his complete set, and he led the crowd in headbanging along to his performance, all while the stage strobes flashed behind him and his band in time to the beat. The crowd seemed to get lost in the music, keeping their hands raised high and some even closing their eyes as the evening slowly came to a close.

If you’re a fan of industrial synth, keep Perturbator on your listening radar.
