New to the Airwaves – Albums Out This Week (September 16)

Summer festival season is coming to a close, not a moment too soon IYKYK?. The hottest tours have rebooked their rescheduled tours, fresh new tours have dominated my email blasts, and we are at a concert almost every night now. You can hear the cry of the pumpkin spice girls in the not so distance. Jason is peering around one corner and the beautiful laughter of the Sampson sisters is soon to be crisp in the air. The outdoor season while it’s leaving soon, the line-up for the Fall season is pretty stellar.

The season of album releases is now upon us,to wrap up this week, we’ve got some much-anticipated arrivals that have us tapping our toes, crossing our arms, and screeching, “Finally!” We’re sure you can see which ones we think you should grab and which ones we think may deserve a pass (cough). Dive in at your own risk, and let’s hear your picks!

Thrice Announces New Track “Open Your Eyes and Dream” out 9/20

PRE-SAVE NOW HERE

California rock band Thrice have announced the release of their newest single “Open Your Eyes and Dream,” out via Epitaph Records on September 20th. Fans can pre-save “Open Your Eyes and Dream” now here. “It’s so very easy to believe that big systemic issues can’t change because we’ve lived with them our whole lives. But if you look back and zoom out a bit it’s easy to see that this feeling of permeance and inevitability is just an illusion. Most things seem impossible until they happen. This song is about opening our eyes to that reality, and being willing to dream something better into existence,” shares singer Dustin Kensrue. The new single comes in after the September 2021 release of Horizons/East.  The album conveys a palpable sense of danger, determination, and possibility and exemplifies art as a work of recognition — the human task of perceiving oneself amid details, disasters, and blessings as a relentlessly relational phenomenon among others.

In this, Horizons/East is the rare rock album on which interrelatedness is a theme, painting an adventurous and lush landscape mixed by Scott Evans that the band self-produced and recorded at their own New Grass Studio. Horizons/East is available now at https://thrice.ffm.to/horizonseast.

“In short, [Horizons/East is] an overall sonic triumph that deserves repeated listens to really gain deeper appreciation of the complexities and nuances dug deep within the layers of impeccable production and musicianship.” – Outburn Magazine “… it’s a sound that suits the band, particularly frontman Dustin Kensrue’s dusky vocals, quite well. The instrumentals still hit like classic Thrice, but there’s more subtleties and textures within the arrangements. It’s good stuff.” – Revolver Magazine

“In short, it’s another typically ambitious, brilliantly realized listen, and it might just be Thrice’s most sonically bold vision yet – at least until its follow-up which, as Kensrue reveals, is already well underway.” – Guitar World

“[Horizons/East] incorporates musical techniques from jazz and other styles alongside a wide array of deliberate experiments. However, the innovative approach never overshadows a basic goal: creating meaningful and sonically appealing music.” – Alternative Press

“The word that most closely comes to mind when talking about Thrice is consistency. The second word that I most closely associate with this legendary band on their 11th studio album, Horizons/East, is variety. They simply do not make the same record twice; a true marking of an artist that is uncomfortable with the comfort that comes with creating similar sounding material.” – Chorus.fm
Formed in 1998, the Orange County-based four-piece is widely regarded as one of the most innovative rock bands of their generation. Featuring frontman Dustin Kensrue, guitarist Teppei Teranishi, bassist Eddie Breckenridge, and drummer Riley Breckenridge.

Alt-rockers Switchfoot announce first-ever Christmas LP

SWITCHFOOT ANNOUNCES NEW LP, THIS IS OUR CHRISTMAS ALBUM, OUT NOVEMBER 4TH

LAUNCHES FIRST CHRISTMAS TOUR ON NOVEMBER 26TH AT KNOXVILLE’S CIVIC AUDITORIUM

September 7th – Today, Grammy Award winning rock band Switchfoot announces their new LP, this is our Christmas album, out November 4th. Marking the band’s first-ever holiday record, this is our Christmas album finds Switchfoot infusing their signature West Coast sound to a number of holiday classics and five, new original Christmas songs. Cheery, nostalgic and brimming with sunshine, the 11 track collection was inspired by everyone from the Beach Boys to Black Flag, and promises to be the perfect soundtrack for the holiday season with a new California twist.

“Christmas is an emotional treasure chest for a songwriter to pull from,” lead Singer Jon Foreman says. “It’s a season stretched tight with contradictions: celebrating the free gifts of love and grace with an outburst of materialist capitalist consumption. An emotional roller coaster of family and friends, hopes and scars- bringing out the worst and the best in all of us.” A project that’s been years in the making, this is our Christmas album, wraps its arms wide around these contradictions.

Alongside the album announcement, Switchfoot announces their North American “this is our Christmas tour” which sees the band visiting Napa, Detroit, Monterey, Anaheim and more. Switchfoot’s live show is a force to be reckoned with, and the band’s first Christmas tour is no exception. Since the band’s creation they’ve performed to sold out audiences in over 40 countries and have racked up over five million tickets sold. These shows are going to be special as the group, that’s been described as “definition of cool” by Vulture, will perform one Christmas themed set, and another set filled with the band’s classic hits like “Dare You To Move,” “Meant to Live” and more.

“It’s truly incredible the way music connects us all: making even strangers feel like family,” Jon Foreman says. “To celebrate this season, singing these songs together in the same room is a gift that we can’t wait to unwrap. We’re so excited to head out on our first Christmas tour ever!”
Artist pre-sale begins today, September 7th at 12pm local time, local tour pre-sales start Thursday, September 8th at 10am local time, and general tour on-sale begins Friday, September 9th at 12pm local time. See below for full routing.

Purchase tickets here: https://switchfoot.com/pages/tour
this is our Christmas album is a follow up to 2021’s interobang, which saw the band opt for raw 60’s era pop-infused feel and straying away from their typical rock sound. Penned through the pandemic, interrobang celebrates the journey when the destination is unsure. It illustrates the contrast between joy and pain, faith and doubt, and marks a bold new creative peak for the multi-platinum rockers.

Of the song, Joss says “It really puts a smile on my face and makes me think of all the unique things that make Christmas special to me. Great lyrics by the legend that is Stevie Wonder. What a fun song to have amongst the wonder and magic of this album.” Inspired by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby and Michael Buble, the album celebrates the holiday season with fifteen classic Christmas tracks including favorites such as “Winter Wonderland”, “Let It Snow”, “Jingle Bells”, “Silent Night” and moreplus two new original songs written by Joss, “If You Believe” and “Bring On Christmas Day” – a track celebrating her lifetime love for the joyful holiday. In a teaser Joss shared while working in the studio she states, “I have thought about making a Christmas album for years, I am Christmas obsessed!” She also enthusiastically explains that the Christmas songs that she grew up listening to are covered in orchestra, which is ever present on this collection.
Recorded in Nashville where Joss is currently based, Merry Christmas, Love arrives just weeks before the birth of her second child, due in October. With songs that encourage families to sing together, the album is sure to be a staple in her growing household as well.

Nearly two decades ago, Joss exploded on the music scene with her platinum-selling, breakout debut The Soul Sessions (also on S-Curve). Since then, she has won a Grammy (plus three additional nominations), released two platinum-certified albums, collaborated with everyone from Mick Jagger and Smokey Robinson to Raphael Saadiq and The Roots, and most recently Dave Stewart in addition to many more. Joss recently won The Masked Singer UK in 2021 and celebrated the ten year anniversary for Soul Sessions Vol. 2 this past July.

“Making this record has honestly been a dream come true. It’s been years and years playing in my head and now finally I get to hear it in reality. It seems to be very true that good things come to those who wait, Joss states on recording the album. “All the Christmas stars have aligned and put me in the right place at the right time with the right team of people to make this music shine magic in every direction. I just hope people enjoy hearing it as much as I have making it,” she concludes.
About Joss Stone: Armed with a powerful voice and a sound based in vintage soul, Joss Stone hit the mainstream as a teenager and has enjoyed an enduring career of unpredictable twists and turns. The Grammy and Brit award winning singer, who has sold over 12 million album worldwide, first earned a devoted audience at home and abroad with reinterpretations of classic soul songs and has expanded it with her songwriting chops and ability to explore styles far afield of vintage R&B, her first love. Over the past decade, Joss has continued to build an impressive global audience through her touring while also continuing the great work done by The Joss Stone Foundation, which she started in 2014 and supports various charities across the world for people in need. Joss has recently collaborated with Dave Stewart on two solo albums including this year’s Never Forget My Love. Now the Grammy and Brit award winner has her sights set on her first ever holiday album with Merry Christmas, Love.
