Bas makes his return to Philadelphia during his latest tour!
It’s a rainy Tuesday night in Philadelphia, and crowds eagerly wait outside the Theater of The Living Arts in anticipation for Bas! He’s currently on the road celebrating the release of his fourth studio album, ‘We only Talk About Real Shit When We’re Fucked Up’.
Abbas Hamad, better known as Bas, is a rapper/musician from Queens, New York. He’s been releasing music since 2013, which saw the release of his first mixtape ‘Quarter Water Raised Vol. 1’. Soon after, Bas went on to sign with J.Cole’s Dreamville Records as their first signee.
Since his signing Bas has released 4 studio albums, with credits on multiple collaborations with the label such as ‘Revenge of the Dreamers II + III’, and ‘D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape’.
Captivating the likes of fans from around the globe, Bas’s down to earth rhythm and lyrics resonate with many who listen to him. While tracks like ‘Costa Rica’ have garnered millions of streams for its upbeat and hard hitting flows.
Ultimately, it’s the energy on tracks like ‘Risk’ and “Let go my Hand’ with J.Cole that allow Bas to shine the most! This was especially prominent on his last album W.O.T.A.R.S.W.W.F.U; which touched on many personal issues Bas has experienced since ‘Milky Way’ in 2018. Bringing these experiences to TLA; fans got to enjoy a night with the rapper they surely won’t forget.
Beginning with a series of fantastic openers; Fans were first treated to artists Hoosh, Reuben Vincent, and Blxcie. Hailing from Sudan, Hoosh kicked the night off with a blend of Hip-Hop, R&B, and Soul! Hoosh set the mood early with a variety of tracks showcasing his vocal ability and talent. For his first time in Philadelphia, his set crowd control was phenomenal!
This energy only seemed to continue with Reuben Vincent. The artist/producer comes from Charlotte, NC with roots in Libera, West Africa.
Signing with 9th wonder’s independent label at age 17, Vincent has been garnering attention for his lyrical ability and incorporation of southern & tribal sounds. Bringing this wave to Philadelphia, Vincent delivered a powerful follow up to Hoosh.
Lastly was Blxckie, who is a 23 year old musician from Durban, South Africa. After meeting Bas at a club in South Africa, he was invited to join the tour away from his home country to perform. Humbly accepting, Blxckie brought a smooth borage of Melodic trap to fans in attendance performing notable tracks such as ‘Hold’ and ‘Ye x4. Blxckie returned later on to help Bas perform their song together ‘U-Turn’ off his album.
After 3 amazing performances, fans were eating well. However, the main course soon arrived and it was steaming! Bas cooked all night long as he took stage to perform W.O.T.A.R.S.W.W.F.U; along with many notable classics from his discography. On stage to assist him was a live band which included vocalists, a guitarist, and pianist representing THE FIENDS, Bas’s creative collective. He gave multiple moments to the band dedicated to instrumental/vocal solos, which provided impressive displays for the audience to enjoy.
Everyone on stage made it their mission to deliver an unbelieve experience to the fans. From ‘179 Deli’ to ‘Tribe’ Bas gave everyone something to take with them during his performance; whether it be through the visuals, the music, or the message. During the show, Bas took time to reflect on personal experiences with the war in Sudan. His track, ‘Khartoum’ which he performed after was written in response to raw emotions after seeing his family and friends fleeing their homes for safety. He wanted to shed light to the issues going on that we don’t think about daily, and as a reminder to be grateful.
As he closed out his show, he made it known how grateful he was to his fans and those supporting his music. “I don’t take a single one of you for granted that came into this building tonight’, said Bas. Closing out his final song of the evening, Bas asked a brave soul in the audience to come up on stage with him to rap the second verse to his song ‘Lit’ featuring J.Cole. “This is a dream come true, thank you so much!, said the fan.
It’s hard not to love the energy Bas brings to a room when he’s in it, and there was no better place than TLA to celebrate that tonight!
