Underoath Celebrates 20 Years of They’re Only Chasing Safety with a Powerful Night at The Fillmore

The post-hardcore icons deliver a nostalgic and electrifying performance that proves their enduring legacy.

Crowd-3

Underoath, the legendary post-hardcore band known for blending raw emotion with explosive energy, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their groundbreaking album They’re Only Chasing Safety.

Underoath-22

We had a chance recently to catch them live at a sold out Fillmore Charlotte and it was a powerful reminder of why this record and band has stood the test of time. From the moment they stepped on stage, the band unleashed a high-energy performance bursting with passion, nostalgia, and an undeniable bond with the audience.

Merch-2 Crowd

The packed venue echoed with fans singing every lyric, a testament to how deeply Underoath’s music still connects, more than 20 years later.

CodeSeven-8

Opening this evening North Carolina’s own Codeseven delivered a mesmerizing performance, blending melody and atmosphere the band rolled through a dimly lit set. Being an NC native myself Codeseven was one those bands that you always saw on the local bills and somehow this was the very first time that I ever saw them.

CodeSeven-16 CodeSeven-31 CodeSeven-25 CodeSeven-21 CodeSeven-3 CodeSeven-14

Later as Underoath took a moment to shout out the openers, front man Spencer Chamberlain expressed his love for the band and credited them and a performance of theirs he saw when he was young as the defining moment at which he knew he wanted to be a musician and performer.

Crowd-7

Opening the night right on time the sold out crowd was still piling in but the venue was getting crowded fast and so were the drink and merch lines.

StaticDress-12

The next band on the bill, Static Dress brought a fresh wave of intensity with their chaotic yet captivating sound, instantly energizing the crowd after a short set break.

StaticDress-25

Utilizing the risers for the Underoath performance the band brought a few props of their own both on the set and in their attire.

StaticDress-21

However, no extras were necessary as this band and their intensity level was all that was needed.

StaticDress-6

A new band to me, they were an example of catching an opener that you know you will be listening to on the way home and keeping up with them as they continue to evolve.

StaticDress-31

On tour with Underoath in the U.K. I was glad they made their way back with them to the U.S. as I really liked their sound and their performance making for a perfect opener for the evening.

Underoath-33

Taking the stage next Underoath took advantage of their interesting stage set up. Reminiscent of a basement practice space with a couch, mini fridge, and table lamps the members of the band walked out one at a time and slowly integrated into the opening song driving the packed house wild and building energy into a frenzy as they finally erupted into song.

Underoath-14

From there it was on as the band and the crowd engaged in a back and forth of how much energy they could deliver. Frontman Spencer Chamberlain is really good at engaging with the crowd during and in between songs and in one moment brought in a few fans to join them on stage and hang out on a couch.

Underoath-3

As a fun twist the fans got to join Spencer’s mom on stage on the couch as well as they hung out for a song. As an NC native Spencer had family in the house and later he gave a shout out to his dad that just beat cancer and took a moment for us to all cheer for that wonderful news.

Underoath-19

Opening the evening with songs from their album They’re Only Chasing Safety the band took an interesting sort of short intermission loading the stage with fog and returning to play some more music from their catalog.

Underoath-25

Hitting a bit of a technical bump it was fun listening to the guys pick on each other and then smoothly moving on from a song that was just not going to work to engaging with the crowd and picking a fan selection from the screaming crowd as they pulled out a track they said they had not played since the 2004 Warped Tour.

Underoath-31

The second half of their set continued the intensity level and the band did a great job of continuing to keep the crowd involved with their new song “Generation No Surrender”.

Underoath-10

This new song has a call and response chorus that the crowd can participate with and after a quick introduction the band jumped in and once again brought the crowd with them.

Underoath-12

Never relenting the band wrapped up the evening delivering an enthusiastic performance and showcasing exactly why this was a sold-out show.

Photographer Josh Gooch is a North Carolina native and a graduate of Appalachian State, Josh Gooch works in education, teaching graphic design at the community college level. Photography became a passion during his college career, and remained a constant addition to the ever-present soundtrack of life. Privileged to have turned an ear to hip-hop at a young age, after developing a love of music from ‘80s radio, Josh found that the revelation of rock music in high school was what led him to really devote serious amounts of attention to music. From there it was that first club show that sparked an addiction to live music and the exposure to various forms of it during the college years, cementing a love of passion and truth in music. Now, with the ability to combine the passions of photography and music, he hopes to continue to develop a creative voice that others appreciate.

Excellent read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing some research on that. And he just bought me lunch because I found it for him smile Therefore let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch! “By nature, men are nearly alike by practice, they get to be wide apart.” by Confucius.

The essence of existence is like smoke, always shifting, always changing, yet somehow always present. It moves with the wind of thought, expanding and contracting, never quite settling but never truly disappearing. Perhaps to exist is simply to flow, to let oneself be carried by the great current of being without resistance.

Even the gods, if they exist, must laugh from time to time. Perhaps what we call tragedy is merely comedy from a higher perspective, a joke we are too caught up in to understand. Maybe the wisest among us are not the ones who take life the most seriously, but those who can laugh at its absurdity and find joy even in the darkest moments.

Man is said to seek happiness above all else, but what if true happiness comes only when we stop searching for it? It is like trying to catch the wind with our hands—the harder we try, the more it slips through our fingers. Perhaps happiness is not a destination but a state of allowing, of surrendering to the present and realizing that we already have everything we need.

The cosmos is said to be an ordered place, ruled by laws and principles, yet within that order exists chaos, unpredictability, and the unexpected. Perhaps true balance is not about eliminating chaos but embracing it, learning to see the beauty in disorder, the harmony within the unpredictable. Maybe to truly understand the universe, we must stop trying to control it and simply become one with its rhythm.

If everything in this universe has a cause, then surely the cause of my hunger must be the divine order of things aligning to guide me toward the ultimate pleasure of a well-timed meal. Could it be that desire itself is a cosmic signal, a way for nature to communicate with us, pushing us toward the fulfillment of our potential? Perhaps the true philosopher is not the one who ignores his desires, but the one who understands their deeper meaning.

All knowledge, it is said, comes from experience, but does that not mean that the more we experience, the wiser we become? If wisdom is the understanding of life, then should we not chase every experience we can, taste every flavor, walk every path, and embrace every feeling? Perhaps the greatest tragedy is to live cautiously, never fully opening oneself to the richness of being.

Friendship, some say, is a single soul residing in two bodies, but why limit it to two? What if friendship is more like a great, endless web, where each connection strengthens the whole? Maybe we are not separate beings at all, but parts of one vast consciousness, reaching out through the illusion of individuality to recognize itself in another.
