Might As Well Be Brothers Osborne
Country Music Duo Shines In Charlotte
Country music’s hottest duo Brothers Osborne are back at it again with an amazing new EP Break Mine and a scorching live show that has them out on the road this summer on the Might As Well Be Us Tour. First of all, if you aren’t familiar with them, yes, they are actually brothers and secondly, why aren’t you because Brothers Osborne is the real deal, a full country music package that will have you stomping your boots, dancing in the aisles, and shedding a tear in your beer.
John and TJ Osborne have been bringing music fans the best mix of country and southern rock since 2012 and haven’t looked back since. The two recently raised the roof in Charlotte (well, not technically because Skyla is an open-air venue but you get the idea) playing to a packed house at Skyla Credit Union Ampitheatre for a night fans would not soon forget.
The evening was hot as the crowd filed into the ampitheatre rocking their best Brothers Osborne attire complete with the requisite cowboy hats and boots. Everyone was ready to rock out to their favorite tunes and soak up the full concert experience.
Kicking off the evening’s festivities was singer-songwriter Caylee Hammack. I was unfamiliar with Caylee’s music going into the show and was excited to hear her set. A huge banner hung at the rear of the stage and a glass of whiskey was front and center close to the edge of the stage. Caylee blew onto the stage like a warm, summer breeze in a gorgeous flowing dress, long red locks blowing around her.
Her music was just as lovely as she graced us with her latest song “The Hill” as well as a medley of cover tunes. Hammock’s voice is unusual, a wonderful sound that reminded me of a cross between Reba McEntire and Melissa Etheridge. Caylee’s set was a wonderful surprise and a great addition to a stellar night of music. I’m positive that I wasn’t the only new fan she made that night. Go check out her music now!
After a short break, it was finally time for the main event. The crowd was amped up for Brothers Osborne to take the stage and when the venue lights finally dimmed, the air was alive with cheers and plenty of whoops and hollers.
Brothers Osborne came out and got everyone on their feet for the hard-driving “Might As Well Be Me,” a great start to what would be an amazing night of country music at its finest. The Brothers took their requisite spots on center stage, John just stage right of center, cowboy hat on his head, and TJ just stage left of center, bomber jacket on. The energy and chemistry on the stage were off the charts from the very first notes and would continue throughout the set.
TJ’s vocals were dead-on as he walked the front of the stage, acoustic guitar slung across his back, pointing at the crowd and getting everyone involved in the show. John’s guitar was scorching as he made his way down onto the speaker cabinets in the pit, bending the strings and making that guitar talk. As expected, their backing band sounded amazing too and there was no doubt that we were in the company of some of the finest musicians ever to grace a stage.
The lights were flashing different colors as the LED screen at the rear showed different images depending on the song. The set was a wild ride through Brothers Osborne’s hits including “Break Mine” and “Weed, Whiskey, and Willie.” There were even a few cover tunes thrown into the mix with a standout rendition of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” which is now available on the Tom Petty tribute album Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty along with a variety of other country artists.

The evening ended on a personal journey of sorts with the exceptional “Younger Me” as we all reflected on our younger selves and how that younger version shaped the person we are today. It was a perfect end to a perfect evening of music under the skies of Charlotte.
