Memphis May Fire Set The Underground Ablaze

Matty Mullins and company bring the heat to a sold-out stop in Charlotte.

On Wednesday May 14th, Memphis May Fire brought one of the last few stops of their Shapeshifter Tour to a sold-out crowd at The Underground in Charlotte. The Nashville-based metalcore veterans hit the road last month fresh off of their latest Rise Records release, Shapeshifter.

With three other high-energy opening acts ready to tear up the stage – Elijah, Windwalkers, and the UK’s Caskets, the evening promised a full spectrum of music for fans to sweat it out in one of the Queen City’s more intimate venues and sweat it out is exactly what they did.

Doors opened promptly at 6:00 PM, and long before then, the line of eager concertgoers was already snaking around the block. To shake off the stress of traffic and ease into the evening, I ducked into VBGB’s next door for a cold beer and a BAP (Big Ass Pretzel). There’s something grounding about that routine, a moment of calm before the storm that always hits when I’m at The Music Factory.

I had never caught any of the bands on this bill live before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but was looking forward to what was in store. By the time I made my way inside, The Underground was already filling up. Fans of all ages grabbing drinks, merch, and finding their spots on the floor.

Setting the pace for the night was the first opener, Elijah, who launched into the evening with his new song “Skin,” and it didn’t take long for the room to fully lock in.

Despite being the first act on stage, Elijah and his band wasted zero time firing up the crowd and their intensity was contagious.

His set was an energetic mix of the pop-punk hits that first made him a viral sensation on TikTok.

Along with several of his more recent, heavier releases such as his explosive finale, “UNDERRATED,” a brutal new track that sent the crowd into a frenzy.

By the end of his performance, it was evident that those who were not familiar with Elijah beforehand would be leaving as fans.

As the crowd began to swell after Elijah’s high-energy set, Massachusetts-based post-hardcore outfit Wind Walkers took the stage with their emotionally charged opener, “The Overlook.”

Peppered into the mix was their latest release “The End Aesthetic” – a catchy, more synth-driven single that just dropped on Spotify last month.

Frontman Trevor Borg delivered a heartfelt performance seamlessly navigating between heavy screams and clean melodies. Closing out their set for the night was the fan-favorite “Hangfire,” with the audience passionately singing every word alongside the band.

After a brief break and a crowd-wide singalong in the dark to Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer,” the lights hit once again, and it was time to keep the momentum rolling. Caskets, hailing all the way from Leeds, England, stepped up as the third opener.

Opening with their track “Believe” off of their 2023 album Reflections, Matt Flood’s voice felt raw and real. He looked visibly moved as he was taking in the buzzing energy from the crowd – the kind that can only be felt during a live show.

Their set moved fluidly between soaring anthems and heavier, more aggressive moments, including their fresh new single “Make Me a Martyr,” which just debuted last week.

Now for the moment we’ve all been waiting for. There’s something unmistakably electric about a Memphis May Fire show. Opening with “Shapeshifter,” they erupted onto the stage instantly recharging the tightly packed room. From the first breakdown to the final chorus, fans were fully in it. Crowd surfing, raising fists, and losing themselves in every note.

The setlist leaned heavily into Shapeshifter, featuring tracks like “Overdose” and “Chaotic,” each one driven by frontman Matty Mullins’ powerful vocals and a rhythm section that hits like a freight train.

Mullins – now pulling double duty as the frontman of Anberlin as well – showed no signs of fatigue – only fire. His presence was commanding, his voice razor-sharp, and his ability to connect with the audience is unmatched.

Throughout the night, Mullins occasionally wielded a fog machine gun, blasting the crowd with smoke and confetti, tossing bottles of water to fans between songs, and keeping the room hyped with every interaction.

Longtime fans were treated to a few throwbacks as well. Hearing anthems like “The Sinner” and “Vices” sent waves of nostalgia through the venue.  At one point, he shouted, “18 years and 8 albums later!” a reminder of just how far the band has come.

When it came time for the finale, Mullins grinned and shouted, “I hope you still have your voices, Charlotte,” before prompting the entire room to sing along to the final song.

They closed with “Blood & Water” – my personal favorite by them – and it was the perfect way to end the night. Crowd surfers rolled overhead, voices rose in unison, and every corner of the venue felt alive. Memphis May Fire has never been a band to stand still, and this tour proves they’re not just evolving, they’re thriving. If you have the chance to catch these guys live, take it.
