Charlotte Underground Roars for Superheaven Tour

Superheaven and company delivered a high-voltage showcase from start to finish.

Superheaven-2

When Superheaven announced a tour with Cloud Nothings, End It, and Soul Blind it was impossible not to take notice, that is a stacked lineup!

Superheaven-56

Four bands in one night could be exhausting, but from the first step inside to The Fillmore Charlotte Underground, the crowd was already buzzing, and I knew right away this was going to be a good night of music.

Soul Blind opened the night, and for me it was a long time coming. I’ve been following their sound since their debut album caught my ear, but I’d missed them the last few times they rolled through.

This time I wasn’t letting it slip.

Their set leaned heavily into the riffs, thick and immersive, with the kind of weight you want from an opener.

Their set was full of energy and riffs and left me with a ton of excitement for their next album Red Sky Mourning set to release in October.

End It followed with the hardest edge of the lineup. At first, I thought they might be a bit of an outlier here, but the fit worked.

Their debut full-length Wrong Side of Heaven dropped in August and it’s packed with hardcore jams, so the setlist practically wrote itself. This was my second time covering them, and again they were relentless.

Frontman Akil Godsey kept things moving between songs with sharp crowd interactions and quick monologues, keeping the room engaged without ever losing focus on the music.

Then came Cloud Nothings, and the atmosphere shifted. Out in the audience, you could easily spot the diehards, fans who knew every word and every squall of distortion.

Cloud_Nothings-20

Their set pushed into noise rock territory; more avant-garde compared to the riff-driven punch of the earlier acts.

Cloud_Nothings-7

Less about clean structures, more about building tension and letting it break.

Cloud_Nothings-2

It was a curveball in the flow of the night, but a welcome one, and it clearly hit for the fans who showed up just for them.

Superheaven-9

It was time for the headliners, but before Superheaven even hit the stage, the crowd made it clear where their energy was. A chant broke out, the room got rowdy, and at one point someone climbed on a friend’s shoulders to snag a stuck T-shirt from the rafters.

Crowd-15

The successful grab earned loud cheers, and by then the crowd was primed. When Superheaven finally walked out, the place erupted. Crowd surfing started immediately, and the band wasted no time diving into heavy riffs that carried straight through their set.

Superheaven-52

For me, Superheaven comes with a personal history. My introduction started with a text from a friend telling me to check out a song that “sounded so familiar.” I listened, agreed, and dug deeper, only to realize Superheaven had previously gone by the name Daylight, a band we had actually seen live together previously as an opening act. That kind of connection and loving each album release from the band added another layer to finally seeing them headline.

Superheaven-26

They pulled songs from all three of their albums with a solid balance, but unsurprisingly, “Youngest Daughter” and “Stare at the Sun” were the big crowd moments. Watching from the pit, it was hard not to notice the nostalgic pull of the night. Maybe it was the sound of bands like Superheaven and Soul Blind, maybe it was the kids in baggy jeans and band shirts, or maybe I’m just biased, but it all felt like stepping into a show from my own younger days.

Superheaven-9

By the end, what stood out most wasn’t just the individual performances but how well this lineup fit together. Four different acts, each with their own space, all adding up to a night that felt both of the moment and like a reminder of why shows like this stick with you.

Photographer Josh Gooch is a North Carolina native and a graduate of Appalachian State, Josh Gooch works in education, teaching graphic design at the community college level. Photography became a passion during his college career, and remained a constant addition to the ever-present soundtrack of life. Privileged to have turned an ear to hip-hop at a young age, after developing a love of music from ‘80s radio, Josh found that the revelation of rock music in high school was what led him to really devote serious amounts of attention to music. From there it was that first club show that sparked an addiction to live music and the exposure to various forms of it during the college years, cementing a love of passion and truth in music. Now, with the ability to combine the passions of photography and music, he hopes to continue to develop a creative voice that others appreciate.
