Anberlin Rocks Neighborhood Theatre

Alternative Rockers Celebrate 20 Years of Never Take Friendship Personal 

Has it really been 20 years since Anberlin shot to the forefront of the alt-rock scene with their iconic sophomore album Never Take Friendship Personal? Indeed, it has, and to mark this momentous occasion, the band has hit the road here in the U.S.

Original vocalist Stephen Christian is on hiatus from the band and has been replaced by touring vocalist Matty Mullins. Yes, Matty Mullins from Memphis May Fire! Despite that change, the core of the band has remained the same with Joseph Milligan on lead guitar, Deon Rexroat on bass, Christian McKalhaney on rhythm guitar, and Nathan Young on drums.

The band stopped in at the iconic NODA venue, Neighborhood Theatre, here in Charlotte, bringing their energetic live show to a sold-out crowd of fans both young and old. 

The stage was set up very low-key with a curtain covering the back and a small riser for Nathan’s drum kit, flanked by LED strip lights on each side. The band took the stage bathed in shades of deep green as the venue sprang to life, coming to a full roar as Matty Mullins hit center stage. The first half of the show featured the playing of Never Take Friendship Personal in full, with iconic hits “Paperthin Hymn” and “The Feel Good Drag” taking us all back 20 years to relive iconic moments and memories.

Anberlin was on fire. They sounded great, and Matty worked the crowd like the seasoned pro he is, even taking the time to address the fans, expressing his gratitude for being a part of it.  After treating us to the full album live, the band returned for a four-song encore to cap off an evening of fantastic rock.

It may be 2025, but Anberlin sounded as good, if not better, than they did back in 2005.
