Concert Review: Vance Joy Brings Heartfelt Magic to Charlotte’s Skyla Amphitheatre

Vance Joy (99)

On a warm September evening, the Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre in Charlotte transformed into a haven of indie-folk bliss as Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy (Atlantic Records) took the stage. Known for his soul-stirring melodies and lyrical sincerity, Joy delivered a performance that felt both intimate and expansive—like a campfire singalong under a stadium of stars.

A Bit of Background Vance Joy, born James Gabriel Keogh, first captured hearts worldwide with his breakout hit “Riptide” in 2013. Since then, he’s built a reputation for crafting emotionally resonant songs that blend acoustic warmth with pop sensibility. His albums Dream Your Life Away, Nation of Two, and In Our Own Sweet Time have solidified his place as a global touring artist, with fans drawn to his gentle charisma and poetic storytelling.

The Charlotte Setlist & Vibe Opening with “From Afar,” Joy set the tone for a night of vulnerability and joy. The crowd swayed and sang along to favorites like “Red Eye,” “Mess Is Mine,” and “Saturday Sun.” His performance of “Fire and the Flood” was a communal moment—hundreds of voices rising in unison, echoing the song that started it all. The setlist also included newer tracks from In Our Own Sweet Time, showcasing his growth as a songwriter while staying true to his acoustic roots. We were also treated to his newest songs “Fascination” which has not been released yet and his newest release “Divine Feelings”. Fans were apt to note his fan-favorite “Riptide,’ was indeed missing from the set.

Vance Joy’s performance at Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre wasn’t just a playlist of hits — it was a masterclass in emotional connection.

Backed by a tight, versatile band, Joy moved effortlessly between stripped-down acoustic moments and full-bodied arrangements that filled the open-air venue with warmth. The stage design was minimal but effective: soft lighting, warm hues, and a setting that evoked the dreamy, nostalgic tone of his latest album In Our Own Sweet Time.

Between songs, Joy’s easygoing banter and genuine smile made the crowd feel like old friends. He shared stories behind the music — and gave shoutouts to fans holding handmade signs. During “Saturday Sun,” he paused to let the audience sing the chorus, visibly moved by the sea of voices echoing his lyrics.

One of the most memorable moments came where the band leaned into a more upbeat, synth-tinged arrangement that had the crowd dancing. Joy’s vocals remained tender and expressive throughout, especially on ballads like “I’m With You” and “Missing Piece,” which showcased his ability to turn a massive venue into a quiet, reflective space.
