Anniversary tours are some of the coolest types of shows out there. In the midst of getting bombarded by nostalgia and jumping around like you did at your first show, you get the hear your favorite songs performed by your favorite people. Classic punk outfit X took some of the America’s best stages to put on their 40th anniversary tour, with the original line up. That’s right! Exene, John, Billy, and DJ are all gracing the musical floor, playing crowd favorites and reliving the beginning. This unique experience was brought to the Neighborhood Theatre earlier this week and it was everything we wanted, and more.

Opening for the epic wave of nostalgia was Oklahoma’s latest punk trio, Skating Polly. What was once a jam band for a Halloween party is now an artsy, punky, noisy music project based on making cool sounds and growing up. Barely adults, Skating Polly is everything right about the up-and-coming alt-rock scene. Their latest album dropped last year, entitled The Big Fit, and marked yet another solid release from the trio. While you can find their first three records online, you probably won’t have to wait long for new music! The band tends to drop something once every 1-2 years, meaning 2018 could potentially bring some new kick ass punk magic!

Moving quickly to the gem of the night, the quartet that is X took the stage and performed a solid 90 minute set of crowd favorites. With classics from all albums and a tight set, the crowd could hardly tell X had been ever been apart. In 1997, the original members all came together, after pursuing their own dreamy careers, and signed to Towers Records Hollywood. Two decades later, the band is on their 40th anniversary tour with no signs of stopping.

“It’s the best time for X right now,” said Exene Cervenka. “Everyone’s really open-minded, and we’ve stuck it out so long. We’re just gonna keep doing it, and we’re never gonna be able to stop.”

Fans can hang out for now, knowing their boundary-pushing, genre-meshing, fashion-forward band is in it for the long haul. Catch the band on tour in a city near you, and invite all your friends!
