The Revivalists’ David Shaw Shakes Things Up With His First Ever Solo Singles and New Video
With his soulful voice and outstanding songwriting skills, David Shaw has been capturing the hearts of music lovers worldwide with The Revivalists as they topped the charts with hits like “Wish I Knew You” and sold-out tours around the world. This time David has taken a more personal approach and delved deep into his inner self to bring us two brand new singles, “Shaken” and “Promised Land.”
“Shaken” is a true reflection of himself as David takes us on a journey of self-discovery and confronting personal insecurities. The music is upbeat with his signature jangly guitar and a hook-laden chorus that makes you want to get up out of your seat and move. The accompanying video is a powerful one, a portrayal of David as a young man on the verge of growing up, being bullied, and yet never wavering. Directed by Kevin Johnson of Hometown Crew, the visuals help paint the whole story of “Shaken.” It’s an outstanding tune and one that fans will instantly embrace.
A fitting statement for current times is “Promised Land,” a heartfelt passion-fueled cry to the heavens of all the societal ills we are currently facing. Tackling difficult subject matters like systemic racism, social injustices, and economic inequality is no easy task but David does it beautifully set against a solemn beat.
There will be more music coming from David Shaw with the promise of a full-length album sometime in 2021 on Yokoko Records/C3 Records. Stay tuned!
Official Press Release:
(New York, NY – September 25, 2020) – Acclaimed singer, songwriter, musician and producer David Shaw has released his first-ever solo singles “Shaken” and “Promised Land,” from his forthcoming studio album due out in 2021 on Yokoko Records/C3 Records. A brand-new video for “Shaken” accompanies the two tracks. With his new music, The Revivalists front man and enigmatic talent follows the direction of his own internal compass as a solo artist, riling up his raw rock ‘n’ roll impulses as he opens up like never before as a lyricist, poet, and storyteller.
Rollicking lead single “Shaken” – PRESS HERE to download/stream – speaks to anyone who feels different or not good enough, often because of the very qualities that make them special. “Shaken” was the first song born as David began exploring this side of his artistry for the first time and while it reflects his inner dialogue as he penned the song, it quickly became something much bigger – a message of confronting fears and insecurities, learning to listen to and follow the things that make you fulfilled and happy, trusting in the path you are on and embracing the unique things that you have to offer as an individual – all illustrated in the video for the song, directed by Kevin Johnson of Hometown Crew. PRESS HERE to watch.
Released alongside “Shaken,” “Promised Land” is a searing statement on the ever-increasing divide between the haves and the have-nots, reflecting the nation’s current reckoning with racial and systemic injustice as the COVID-19 pandemic further exposes the inequities in health outcomes along racial and socioeconomic lines. A dark beat simmers as David rails against inequality with a soulful howl, reminding us that freedom is beautiful only when it can be shared by all. PRESS HERE to download/stream.
About the singles, David shares, “I was going through some tough times, and ‘Shaken’ came out when I first sat down to write a song knowing I was writing for just me this time which was a strange and different sort of feeling. At first, writing this song was an exercise in self-care, but it became bigger than that. This song is for anyone who feels different, left out, misunderstood, or insecure – I want you to know that the things that make you feel that way now can be the same things that can lead you to your purpose or passion, to your happiness or success. On ‘Promised Land,’ I was thinking about how I love my country, but America is not a promised land for so many people. Land of the free – sure, if you’re white and privileged. If you’re Black, you are walking around with a target on your back. Just ask George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and so many others – you can’t, because they aren’t here anymore. The song is talking about the divide we have with race and class in this country. We need to act to dismantle systems that oppress and dehumanize people of color in this country.”
The journey of David’s solo artistry and forthcoming album began as he placed a renewed focus on self-care and personal growth, using music as medicine and noticing something within himself that, as he says, he “needed to water” as he began to create a new personal equilibrium in his life. Listening solely to his own creative impulses, David completed a studio in his backyard where the songs took shape, and he recorded them at The Parlor Recording Studio in New Orleans.
In addition to The Revivalists’ four studio albums including 2018’s acclaimed Take Good Care, 410 million global streams, a platinum breakout single with “Wish I Knew You,” numerous Alternative and Triple A chart hits including several No. 1s, sold out tours, and major media recognition and TV appearances including Austin City Limits, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Ellen, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and TODAY, David spearheaded the creation of The Revivalists’ Rev Causes, the band’s philanthropic umbrella fund which supports the essential work of organizations handpicked by the band dedicated to reviving and investing in our communities, health, and environment. These organizations include Center for Disaster Philanthropy, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Songs for Kids Foundation, Upturn Arts, Everytown for Gun Safety, and more. As a proud Ohio native, David also created, produces, and hosts the Big River Get Down in Hamilton, OH, —an annual two-night concert event that gives back to the ongoing renaissance of his hometown, donating all proceeds to the City of Hamilton’s 4th of July fireworks and RiversEdge Concert Series.
