The Local Beat #5

Hello music lovers! Welcome to this week’s edition of The Local Beat, a new weekly column here on Shutter 16 magazine. The staff here at Shutter 16 is committed to bringing you all the latest information on the local and indie music scene, including must-see shows, exclusive interviews, new music, reviews, and tons more.  Here in the Carolinas, we are lucky enough to live in an area where the local music scene is not only thriving but growing by leaps and bounds. The Local Beat is our way of showcasing the amazing talent right here in our own backyards. So let’s get to it.

This Week’s Rising Star

This week’s rising star honors go to none other than The Wormholes. The duo of Chris Walters and Ben Verner are a staple of the Charlotte rock scene and are known for their amazing live shows. Their sound is a unique blend of guitars, synthesizers, and drums, resulting in an amalgam of rock, pop, and psychedelic that is often referred to as experimental art rock. The duo have a wide range of influences with everything from The Flaming Lips and Outkast to Radiohead and the Deftones giving them a varied background form which to draw inspiration. This past May the band released their latest album Cosmic Propaganda, a wicked effort that offers a little something for all rock fans to enjoy featuring the single “Antidote.”

Chris handles drums, vocals, synths, and production duties with Ben on vocals, guitar, synths, and art work. It is Ben’s original works of art that provide the backdrop for The Wormholes’ live shows which feature his custom art along with lasers and black-light backdrops. The visual effects are stunning and provide the perfect accompaniment to the music which runs the gamut from dreamy pop to prog rock with a lot of psychedelic elements thrown into the mix. It is a live experience that you won’t want to miss. The band has just announced the Cosmic Propaganda Tour for the spring of 2019 which kicks off on March 21st at Monstercade in Winston-Salem with a stop in the Queen City at Snug Harbor on March 29th. Shutter 16 had the opportunity to chat with The Wormholes and find out all the latest information on the tour. You can listen in full to our interview below and be sure to check the band out on tour and enter the world of The Wormholes for yourself.

Tour Bus Trivia

Tour Bus Trivia is a fun segment during which we here at Shutter 16 get to ask fun questions from one of our local artists. It’s kind of like a quiz show, except the questions are easy and often silly, and unfortunately, there are no prizes.  For this week’s installment, the guys in The Wormholes were kind enough to play along. Take a quick listen to find out what they had to say.

If your band would like to be considered for inclusion in The Local Beat or if you have a show or other music news that you would love us to know about, please send us an email at or you can reach out to our man, or in this case, woman on the scene, photojournalist Kris Engelhart at
