The Front Bottoms Sell Out The Fillmore
Laughs and Sing-alongs
Written by Stephanie Cunningham
Like many other avid (obsessed?) concert-goers, I keep up with my favorite bands and venues on social media to make sure I never miss a show. I was thrilled when The Front Bottoms annouced their Fall tour and I saw they would be playing The Fillmore. I’d never seen them live and I couldn’t wait to add their ticket stub to my collection. Apparently, everyone in Charlotte knew they were a must see as well because a week before their show The Fillmore’s Instagram page informed its followers that “these goofballs” had sold out the night.
“Goofballs” is one way to describe the band members, but their lyrics can definitely be described as funny, witty, and honest. Brian Sella sings in a very conversational style and he showcased the connection he makes with fans during their performance Tuesday night. With fists in the air, the audience was singing along with the band so loudly that I could hardly hear the vocals.
The song “Skeleton,” off their second album Talon Of The Hawk, made the audience go crazy. “I fell asleep in the front seat. I never sleep in the front seat. I’m too tall, but I got so stoned.” It was hard to decide if you wanted to yell the lyrics or just laugh. Most of the crowd around me managed a combination of both.
Along with Sella’s excellent vocals and acoustic guitar playing, the rest of the band was putting on a great show as well. The Front Bottoms are actually a two-piece, but there were six musicians on stage. Mathew Uychich, on drums, is the other half of the band. Some of their songs have a faster punk beat and Uychich had no trouble keeping the pace, especially in songs such as “West Virginia” and “Au Revoir (Adios).” I must mention that “Au Revoir (Adios)” was a huge hit with the crowd and definitely one of my favorite songs of the night. It’s under two minutes, but paints such a clear picture of a hostile break up that it felt like a movie was being played out on stage.
Later in the set, Sella asked the audience for requests and the one he heard from the stage was “Father.” He told us that his dad was actually at the show that night and it was a good option. People kept requesting songs though and he debated on stage whether or not to skip “Father” and diss his dad; I felt like this indecisive moment was a good topic for their next song writing session. They ended up playing a little of it and then taking more requests.
Turns out Sella had more family at the show when he casually mentioned that his sister was behind him playing the trumpet and tambourine. Through the night she had been playing some awesome trumpet parts that made their music even more unique. One song with a particularly cool trumpet line was “Vacation Town” off of their new album Going Grey. The trumpet kicks in during the chorus and then sort of explodes during the the middle of the song adding to the tension.
The Front Bottoms put on a performance worthy of a sold out crowd. The audience loved every song and laughed, sang, and laughed again. Their newest album may be called Going Grey, but there was nothing grey or dull about this show. I’ll be anxiously watching my phone notifications for their next tour date in Charlotte.
Catch them on tour now!
