Steel Panther Bring LA’s Sunset Strip to New Jersey With One Hell of A Party
The Sunset Strip Live
Arguably one of the most outrageous bands out there, Steel Panther, have returned with their newest tour The Sunset Strip Live. The band who’s show consist of two sets, one of Steel Panther originals and the other, favorite classic covers. Steel Panther first crashed the scene in 2009 and nobody could tell what was real and what was show; and they prefer it that way. The Panther crew consists of Singer Michael Starr, guitarist Satchel, bassist Lexxi Foxx and drummer Stix Zadinia, and are all about a good time and might remind you of a real life, modern day Spinal Tap.
Steel Panther may come off as a joke, but make no mistake – these guys possess as much genius and talent as all the greats who’ve come before them and those who are the inspirations behind the band. Starr and company, with their big hair, lewd toilet humor and hilarious antics, bring all you’ve come to love or hate about the band directly to the stage. In March of 2017 the band released their fourth studio album titled Lower The Bar. The album is filled roaring riffs and a beautifully polished sound, and sent Steel Panther back into the spotlight. It found the band taking on a sound uniquely their own. The album delivers exactly what the band always promises, crude catchy as hell songs that will make you bob your head and put you right back into the 80’s metal scene. If for some reason you haven’t checked out the album you can pick it up right HERE and support these guys all while having a kickass new album to listen too!
I myself have covered Steel Panther before and somehow when I found out I would be covering the band on their massive headlining tour, I was just as excited as the first time. Afterall, who doesn’t love a night that involves music, drinking, comedy and a costume party all in one. I made my way to Sayreville, New Jersey a town literally known because of the factory like structure turned music venue. Starland Ballroom who has become popular for bringing some pretty large acts through a town otherwise unknown was the setting for Steel Panther’s 80’s glam extravaganza.
As I arrived to Starland on a foggy Thursday night unfortunately Michael Starr and company didn’t bring the Sunset Strip weather with them, but no fear thing’s were bright and warm inside the venue. I made my way through the venue to an unexpected sight. These fans were not the crowd I thought they would be, I was expecting long haired old school metal heads similar to the crowds at a Motley Crue show. Though there was some, I was pleasantly surprised to see a mix of young fans as well as the original hair metal fans.
As I arrived in the photo pit, I noticed 2 things: 1) the security were in great moods and 2) the crowd on the front rail were some of the most awesome people I’ve experienced at a show. When the lights dimmed loud cheers erupted from the New Jersey crowd, it was Thursday night and these fans came to get wild! Steel Panther who are known for filling their set with originals and some amazing classic covers started off their set with “Eyes of A Panther” followed by the crowd pleaser “Goin’ In The Backdoor”. In between songs the Steel Panther crew take it up a notch and the show switches to full blown comedy, whether it be band members mocking each other, involving the crowd or telling tour stories. In fact guitarist Satchel wasn’t satisfied with how the second song of the set ended so he proclaimed “New Jersey that wasn’t good enough, we are gonna end the song again and you better get f**king loud”. The band did just that and the crowd responded with a roar. Something you will also see at a Steel Panther show is lady parts, in good old 80’s rock n’ roll fashion a lifted shirt in the crowd came early and well received. Michael Starr and company went on to play the cover “You Really Got Me” originally done by The Kinks.
The set went on and more hilarity ensued, it’s impossible to get board at a Panther show, these guys are great performers and the crowd participation is incredible to witness in person, the show is literally a huge party and a ton of fun. The bands over the top stage antics, crude humor and ability to sexualize anything makes the show an absolute blast. A show you can go to and forget all your everyday problems and let loose, isn’t that what music is supposed to be? Especially live music. Love them or hate them Steel Panther do just that your price of admission is a ticket to laughter and sing alongs and in my opinion a price well worth it every time!
These guys do not slow down; they’re endless balls of glam rock energy moving full steam ahead. The bands performs for 90 minutes and a total of 14 songs plus an encore. The setlist includes the Van Halen cover “Jump”, the original songs “Just Like Tiger Woods”, “Girl From Oklahoma”, “Death To All But Metal”. Plus classic covers of “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne, “Livin’ On A Prayer” by Bon Jovi and the Steel Panther version of the Def Leppard classic “Pour Some Sugar On Me”.
Steel Panther looked the part, sounded fantastic and brought all the glam, fun, and hair of the 80’s to Jersey for a successful night of fun. As the show ended fans were all smiles walking back to their cars and so was I. It’s a show I just never get tired of no matter how many times I see them, these guys are good like really good. If they come to your town go, and tell them Shutter 16 sent you!
Steel Panther’s Sunset Strip Live Tour is far from over leaving you plenty of opportunities to catch the guy’s and all their ridiculous antics and one of a kind show experience.
