Spoon takes on the summer with Hot Thoughts, starting in CLT

Hot Thoughts takes on the world!

The number of albums a band produces does not necessarily correlate to the amount of success they’ve had; unless that band is Spoon, of course. Over the course of two decades, the Texan quartet have proven to be steadfast in the art of inconsistency, which is a fancy, perhaps ridiculous, way to say they don’t make the same album twice.

This seems like an obvious task for some, because why would you? But when you’ve dropped nine albums since the early 90s, it’s an accomplishment. To be a an active band for two decades, and to make music around the ever-evolving sounds and blends of genres over two decades, is to have figured out the formula for “making it.” Spoon has blended genres, pushed concepts, and redefined what it means to be a band, and now they’re bringing all that hard work to venues all over the country. More specifically, they’re bringing it to the Charlotte Metro Credit Union Amphitheater in the Queen City on July 18th.

Though they’re galavanting in Europe right now, visiting Cologne, Paris, and Madrid, amongst other envy-worthy cities, Spoon will return to the states for a mini-festival run at Sloss Festival in Alabama and Forecastle Festival in Kentucky. Shortly after, the band will start their US run in Charlotte, bringing along a slew of opening bands throughout the tour, including the New Pornopraphers, Twin Peaks, The Shins, Belle and Sebastian, White Reaper, Sweet Spirit, and Mondo Cozmo. Sprinkle in a few more festival sets and the band has only completed half of their musical journey in 2017. The month of November has the guys heading back overseas to play dates in Italy, Sweden, Spain, and other EU countries.

A heavy touring schedule is the result of a new album, as is the case with Spoon as they promote their latest release, Hot Thoughts. Released on March 17th through Matador Records, it is the first piece of work since their 2002 album Kill the Moonlight to not feature multi-instrumentalist Eric Harvey; the world tour to support 2014’s They Want My Soul would be the last of Harvey for Spoon fans.

Fear not, hardcore Spoon lovers, Hot Thoughts is still up to par with the bar they created back in Telephono days. Reaching the number 17 slot on the Billboard Top 200, Hot Thoughts was teased back in January, maybe even accidentally acknowledged, as Matador Records provided fans with the tracklisting, album cover, and release date. The info was deleted shortly after, but the Indieheads Reddit was abuzz as Spoon more or less announced their return to the airwaves.
