Something Clever Rise To New Heights With Moments:Red
Charlotte Rockers Release The First Of 2 New EPs
As a lover of live music, there is nothing I enjoy more than being at a rock show. There is no experience quite like it. It’s even better when you attend a concert and are unexpectedly blown away by one of the opening bands and begin to root for them to do great things. This is how I felt the first time I saw Something Clever perform. I just knew they had “it.” I’m not even sure what “it” is exactly. You can’t define it and you can’t quantify it. You just simply know “it” when you see or hear “it.” Something Clever has been a staple on the Charlotte rock scene since 2013 and they possess “it” in spades. The band has an addicting sound with plenty of crunching, heavy as hell riffs to make you pump your fist in the air and enough melodic hooks and soaring vocals to make them a perfect fit on any rock radio station. (Heads up Sirius/XM Octane and radio programmers, this is a band that should definitely be in your rotation!)
Now that they’ve made a statement on the local scene, Something Clever is poised and ready to take on the entire rock and roll universe with their recent announcement of two brand new EPs coming out. Moments:Red drops first with four powerful songs that showcase what Something Clever is really all about. Kicking thing off is the full- blown metal assault of “The Hill.” This is definitely not for the faint of heart with the blistering guitars of Kelly Flusk and Brett Baker on full display as vocalist Adam Nelson screams “Is this the hill you want to die on?” It’s a terrific tune that really cranks things up a notch. Next up we have their newest single “Fever Dream.” This one really reminded me a lot of Beartooth. It has all the makings of a great stadium rocker and its easy to imagine festival crowds going completely crazy for this one, crowd surfing their way to the barricade with Nelson urging them on. If you like to get down and dirty, look no further than “Angels and Demons.” With a great underlying groove, this tune will definitely have you moving. Lawrence West keeps the bass lines humming and drummer Justin Tyme proves he is a force to be reckoned with behind the kit. There’s also a great transition about halfway through as Nelson takes it down to breathy whispers before pumping things back up again. Closing out Moments:Red is the infectious rock of “Rise,” a song that has already proven to be a hit. “Rise” has garnered over four million views on Crunchyroll’s promo videos for the Japanese anime television series Dragon Ball Super and has most recently been used by Nicktoons on the commercials for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The song is an epic anthem about overcoming hardships and when Nelson sings “We rise, never backing down from a fight!” he’s not only shouting for the band but for the underdog in all of us, giving us the courage to carry on.
Moments:Red is everything a rock record should be. It will have you on your feet with fist pumping in the air as you shout at the top of your lungs. It just doesn’t get any better than that and I can’t wait to see what they do next. Stay tuned to Shutter 16 for a full review of their next EP Moments:Blue coming soon.
