Sights from The Sunken Garden Theater with The Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins
If you grew up in the 90’s, then Smashing Pumpkins is an alternative rock band that you are familiar with. Their breakthrough album Siamese Dream hit the charts in 1993, with their follow up album debuting at number one Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. It was a sad day for many when they broke up in 2000. Billy Corgan, lead singer, has been the staple of the band with many of the other band mates having come and gone amid some turmoil. This tour D’arcy Wretzky will not be found touring with the band.
The band recently embarked on their Shiny and Bright 30th Anniversary Tour. This tour coincides with the release of their new album Shiny and Oh So Bright Vol 1. No Past. No Future. No Sun. The new single “Silvery Sometimes” should be on repeat. I was fortunate to catch them at their San Antonio show at The Sunken Garden Theater. Although a cold evening for south Texas, they played to a packed crowd. The venue was a major player back in the 1980’s San Antonio Music Scene. Bands either played at Hemisfair Arena (no longer standing) or Sunken Gardens, so it was only fitting that they played at that venue.
Some local San Antonio celebrities such as Brent Barry and Matt Bonner could be seen in the crowd. They kept the crowd engaged with a balanced mix of new and old music while throwing in some covers as well, starting out the night with “Solara” and ending with “Heavy Metal Machine”, “Silvery Sometimes” and “Muzzle”. The energy was vibrant and electrifying and the fans loved every minute of it. They are playing through the Fall in select cities. If you are in one of those cities, be certain to catch their show.
