New to the Airwaves – Upcoming Album Releases

We’ve got some treats in this list this week, some duds, but new music always gives me good feelings. This week it seems heavy hearts are overseas with all the terrorist attacks during shows, and even trying to take down the London Bridge. Lets come together with some music and lift our spirits! We’re sure you can see which ones we think you should grab and which ones we think may deserve a pass… Dive in at your own risk, and let’s hear your picks!

**All dates are for U.S. releases unless otherwise noted. Dates are subject to change.

AJR 06

This brotherly trio took the stage of the Fillmore last year as Ingrid Michaelson put on a benefit show in response to the horrific HB2. Now they’re hitting the airwaves with their some brand new music, even though “Weak” is still dominating the pop stations!

“They exploded onto the stage and made sure everyone in the building was dancing along with every note and beat they let loose from the stage. AJR, or Adam, Jack, and Ryan; played the kind of music that forces you to tap your foot and nod your head. Speaking for myself here, I listen to mainly punk rock and black/thrash metal, but these three had me nodding along with every song and smiling the entire time they were on stage. The rest of the crowd certainly felt it as well, as I had multiple people shouting the lyrics back to the band over my head as I took photographs of them.”

This Americana five-piece is back in the music scene once again with a self-titled release! Made up of vocalist Amanda Platt, bassist Rick Cooper, drummer Josh Milligan, guitarist Matt Smith, and mandolinist Tal Taylor, although each member can certainly hold their own on a variety of instruments, The Honeycutters will be sure to freshen up our playlists and soundtrack out summer with new tunes and heartfelt lyrics. The multi-talented group showed off their finely-tuned skills last September at the dearly-missed Double Door Inn! Check out the photo gallery here.

Wack Album of the Week:

Katy Perry – Witness  (Capitol Records)

Remember when Katy “dazzled” us at the Grammy’s? Let’s hope her album overshadows last year’s Grammy performance.

“Katy Perry gave us a strange performance in the cloud and a white picket fence. This one reveals the consistent apparent vapidness that her newest single “Chained To The Rhythm” strains against. The lyrics are inspiring, suggesting we all step out of our ‘bubble’ or ‘rhythm,’ but the music is still so dull, and this performance matched quite well up until the end. With a (rather shoe-horned) superimposed US Constitution projection, the ending lead us to wonder if there was more to the song than just another single. We shall see!”

Recommendation #1

Phoenix – Ti Amo (Atlantic Records)

French indie rockers Phoenix are getting added to our summer playlists today and Ti Amo is finally released! I don’t know about you, but I tend to go into these nostalgia-infused throwback phases where all I listen to is my high school favorites, and Phoenix is always part of that phase. With the release of Ti Amo, I’m sure to get my indie-electronic-genre-confused fix this summer!

Recommendation #2

Rise Against – Wolves (Virgin Records)

Can you believe we’ve got some new Rise Against music? Writer Cindy McBride is as stoked as you are, and even got an early listen! Do you agree with Cindy’s punk rock feelings?

“At a time when the political unrest in our country is seen more than the doctors we desperately need to survive, Rise Against, a punk rock band from Chicago Illinois, has released yet another album that will be listened to for years to come. Rise Against is known for their politically charged lyrics, activism for animal rights, and for being a “straight edge” (refraining from using alcohol, tobacco, and recreational drugs) group. They are once again voicing their opinions on the current events occurring in the United States, as well as the world, with their eighth studio album entitled Wolves, which is to be released on June 9th, 2017.”
