Live Review: COIN visits family in Dallas

HOW WILL YOU KNOW IF YOU NEVER TRY?

Even three hours before doors, the longest line could be seen snaking around the House of Blues Dallas on the chilly Sunday evening for the highly anticipated sold-out COIN show. Some even showed up over twenty four hours before to ensure they are front row for the performance.

“I’ve met friends from previous COIN shows and now it’s one big family. We text all the time, go to shows together, camp out together, we’re a COIN fam,” said Alise.

COIN is an indie-pop band that consists of Chase Lawrence (lead vocals, synthesizers), Ryan Winnen (drums), and Joe Memmel (lead guitar, backing vocals). They’re currently signed to Columbia Records. The group met while attending Belmont University in Nashville and formed in 2012 along with Zach Dyke (former member). Prior to the release of their debut album, they released two EPs; Saturday and 1992.

Later in 2015, they released their single, “Run” in which Billboard deemed as “new wave crash-course survivors,” defined to “break the Nashville mold.” The group quickly gained traction leading up to the release of their debut album: COIN followed by their second album in April 2017 How Will You Know If You Never Try. “Talk Too Much” was the first single released from their second album and remains their most-streamed song across several platforms to date. A third album is anticipated for this spring.

Having seen COIN perform once before (and loved every minute of it), I looked forward to the night. What drew me to the group initially was not only COIN’s performance and songs but the audience’s amazing energy that radiates throughout the venue. I’m convinced that there is no audience like it. Once again, they proved me right.

“Tonight is the biggest sell out of coin’s lil life. Dallas can we really really got for it on a Sunday” -Chase tweeted earlier. @chase_lawrence

The band started off strong with the top hit “I don’t wanna dance.” The crowd jumped in unison and sang along every single word while Chase gave us his all. He danced across the stage and constantly interacted with the fans. The show was high-energy from both the band and the audience and re-confirmed my thoughts on their unique presence. The visuals constantly changed and provided a nice supplement to each song’s mood.

The energy was the most memorable during “’Are We Alone” as the crowd danced collectively throughout the whole song and made it once big dance party. There was nothing like it. Joy could be seen from the audience and from Chase. That was the moment I wanted to remember forever.

Just announced today, COIN will be joining Young The Giant and Fitz and the Tantrums for a summer tour. If you get the chance, I highly suggest catching them live for the best dance party.
