Interview with The Coppertones, and no we’re not talking about the Sunblock!

Florida state is known for several random traits. Fresh squeezed orange juice, gators in swimming pools, and random three minute thunderstorms that happen without fail everyday. However, you may not think of Florida’s thriving music scene when the state is mentioned. Artists such as A Day To Remember, Marilyn Manson, Shinedown, and The Copper Tones all hail from the sunshine state.

The Copper Tones are a four piece group from Fort Lauderdale, and is one of Shutter 16’s breakout ReverbNation Artists, so we get the honor of bringing their self proclaimed “Soulgrass” music, as well as the individuals behind it, right to your front door!

The Coppertones have been taking the world by storm since their founding with countless shows spanning over two tours covering the lower 48 of the United States and even Europe. The soulgrass quartet are spreading their love of music to anyone willing to listen.

We wanted to come up with a name that was rootsy and warm, and we think the idea of copper accomplishes that. We liked the play on words too. Being from Florida, it does also make people think of the sunscreen.”

The Coppertones which consists of Stefanie Smeckers, Dyllan Thieme, Andy Annoied, and Danny Gootner, who combined play a total of nine instruments including an upright bass, banjolele, drums, and harmonica. Not to mention their incredibly talented vocal skills.

On their European tour, which took place shortly before Christmas last year, the group had a few slight lasps of culture shock. We all know when you go to a new country that it takes a few days to get over jet lag, and to get used to the happening around your new city.

“It’s hard to pick the one biggest culture shock but our favorites that come to mind are ketchup and mayonnaise mixed together… on EVERYTHING. And also how the crowds request encores; there are no ‘one more song’ chants, they just sit there, smile, and clap. They literally do not stop clapping until you start the encore song.”

Now that the group is safely back home and the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is over, they are back on the road playing numerous shows around their home state, with shows even scheduled out as far as April. You can guarantee in the new year, and years to come that our ears will be blessed with the soulful melodies of The Copper Tones, and we honestly can’t wait to see what they do next!

Bonus: This or that…

Favorite song on repeat or never hear it again?

“We would never be able to listen again, because if we had to hear it on repeat, it definitely  would not be the favorite anymore!”

Losing all valuable or pictures?

“Photos and memories are way more important.”

Death Eater or Tribute?

“We would rather be Death Eaters because they’re more metal.”

Live without air conditioning or the internet?

“We would rather lose the internet. We can live without it, but it gets pretty hot in South Florida.”

Time Travel or Teleportation?

 “We would rather time travel.”

One eyebrow, or no eyebrows?

“Definitely no eyebrows. If we cant have both, we’ll take none.”
