Hippo Campus brings Bambi Tour to TX
By : Yvan Nguyen
Followed by the release of their second full length album Bambi, Hippo Campus embarked a fall tour – the BAMBI Tour starting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and ending in Houston, Texas.
The Minnesota-based quartet formed in high school and consists of Jake Luppen (vocals), Nathan Stocker (guitar), Zach Sutton (bass guitar), and Whistler Allen (drums). They released Bambi in hopes that their music would connect and help others in dealing with their own pain.
Hippo Campus manages to find their own unique indie sound and have performed at SXSW, Lollapalooza, Red Rocks, Bonnaroo, and Conan. They’ve also supported acts such as Modest Mouse, Walk the Moon, and Sylvan Esso.
The band stopped in Austin, Texas as their second-to-last show of the tour leg to perform at Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheater last week. Previously having seen their performances at SXSW and Lollapalooza (and deeming it as one of the most memorable experiences), I couldn’t wait for another opportunity to see them again. An hour before doors, the line wrapped around the corner and beyond. People anxiously lined up, despite it being on the coldest days of the month in Austin thus far.
Their performances met expectations and beyond. The moment the crowd recognized the start of “Bambi” as their opening song, the crowd went wild. Singing and swaying along, the audience interacted in accordance with the band. Each band member’s high energy which included high jumps and hair flips, along with clear passion put into the performance built on the crowd’s engagement generated a fun, collaborative atmosphere.
The most memorable moment was when Hippo Campus played my favorite song (in which they did not perform at SXSW or Lollapalooza) “warm glow.” I love the song for its unique ability to make me forget all my troubles and feel a sense of tranquility. The moment the chorus was played, it began to slowly drizzle. I closed my eyes to take in the beautiful moment and will never forget it. Add Hippo Campus onto your radar.
Recently announcing a new leg of the tour, Hippo Campus will be heading to tour the West coast followed by Europe. Add Hippo Campus onto your radar – they’re ones you do not want to miss. For more tour dates, check out their site.
