Harry Styles: A Stylish Man Going His Own Direction

Harry Styles: A Stylish Man Going His Own Direction

“You’re a wizard Harry…” at least that’s what I imagine Simon Cowell whispered into Harry Styles’ ear when he first met him backstage at X Factor following Harry’s audition. That audition took place back in 2010, but before that, Harry was performing in his own band titled White Eskimo around his hometown of Holmes Chapel, Cheshire. After taking the stage for his X Factor audition, Harry chose to serenade the audience with an a capella version of Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely” where I would like to remind you that Harry received two votes of ‘Yes’ and one vote of ‘No’.

When judge Louis Walsh voted ‘No’, the crowd booed him for his decision, to which Simon responded to his vote by saying, “I don’t think they booed you loud enough there.” As you may already know, later Simon Cowell and fellow guest judge Nicole Scherzinger thought that Harry and a few other boys should combine their talents to create a boy band that the world didn’t know they needed. These individuals consisted of Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. This band of course was named One Direction, who ended up finishing third in the X Factor competition that year.

If you were ever curious as to where the band name comes from, Harry is actually the one who came up with the name “One Direction” he said in a later interview. Despite their third place finish, One Direction went on to break numerous music records and have been called a modern day version of The Beatles. They became the first band in US Billboard history to have their first four albums debut at number one. As well as earning the highest grossing tour ever by a vocal group in 2014. Let’s be honest here, it’s pretty much impossible to say you’ve never heard a One Direction song. As their popularity grew at an incredible rate the sound waves across the world were saturated with 1D (a common abbreviation for the band’s name). It’s also really hard to not know one song that just makes you want to dance or sing along.

After about five years though it was time for a little change. The first major bombshell dropped on 1D fans around the world when Zayn Malik had announced he was stepping away from the band in March of 2015. Even with Zayn now gone from the band, the rest of the boys knew they owed it to their fans to continue on. Not long after his departure they released their album ‘Made in the A.M’.  However, shortly after the release they announced the band would be taking a hiatus as of January 2016 to allow everyone to pursue their own projects. Since Harry has always been one who loves to write songs and create, he wasted no time signing as a solo artist with Columbia Records in the summer of 2016 while also launching his own record label Erskine Records. It wasn’t until about a year later that the public was introduced to what Harry had been working on in the recording studio.

The first taste of music we got was the single “Sign of the Times which has this incredible power to transport you into a tranquil state while also hypnotizing your body to begin swaying left to right, back and forth. Funny enough, the music video for this song gives a visual representation of that. It was very easy to see that we were in for a treat with the rest of the album. Luckily we didn’t have to wait long; only a month after the first single was released the album was given to the masses. The self-titled debut album is filled with a variety of songs. I have to say I was personally blown away when I first listened to the album. I always love when an artist is able to find way to create different sounds and rhythms while remaining true to themselves. From the rocking beats in “Carolina and “Kiwi” to the serenading sounds heard in “Two Ghost” (a personal favorite) and “Sweet Creature“. This album did not disappoint me. For a glimpse into the making of the album be sure to watch Harry Styles: Behind The Album on Apple Music.

Of course with an album, typically comes a tour. That is exactly what you can find Harry doing right now. Harry’s first headlining world tour has been running since September of 2017 and wraps up this July. He is joined by some incredible artists on different legs of the tour, including Warpaint, Leon Bridges, and finally Kacey Musgraves during the U.S. portion. Both Leon and Kacey are each joining at the perfect time, as they have both just recently released new albums of their own. If you haven’t listened yet, take the time to check out Leon Bridges’ “Good Thing” and Kacey Musgraves’ “Golden Hour.

In a recent interview of Elton John’s Rocket Hour, Kacey was asked by John how such a pairing came to be because Kacey is a country artist and Harry has a different sound. Before I get to that, I would be letting you down if I didn’t remind you that Sir Elton John himself is embarking on a farewell tour later this year, so don’t miss that opportunity. Ok… now back to the regularly scheduled article… As I was saying about the two combining forces; Kacey mentioned that Harry actually reached out to her directly and asked if she would be interested in joining him on tour. Obviously her answer was yes and both of them feel their audiences will really enjoy it.

Although a tour is amazing, Harry has also been up to a few other things lately. Some of which include diving into the world of acting. You may have seen him in one of the most talked about movies of 2017, Dunkirk, a film that captures what life was like during WWII. Taking it a step further Harry has just signed on as an executive producer to a currently untitled comedy TV show starring Damon Wayans, Jr. slated to debut this fall on CBS. While all the fame of being an actor and a musician is nice, Harry has made sure to find ways to give back to the communities around the world. During his tour he has decided to make sure that not only are a portion of his ticket sales donated but he established the Treat People With Kindness initiative which can be found at each of his concerts around the world where his merchandise encourages kindness in the world. To which all of the profits from that merchandise is donated to various local charities at each stop of his tour.

With all of this going on, we can’t wait to see what Harry does next. Although we may get some new music soon, as fans have said to have been introduced to some new songs of his live while on tour. We shall see what the future holds. Be sure to check him out on tour which will soon be passing through South America before finishing it’s final leg in North America.
