Good vibes all around with Of Good Nature at the Visulite
There was a steady flow of fans this past Friday evening at the Visulite Theatre. They all came out on this unseasonably warm night with a full moon to see their favorite bands Of Good Nature and Tropidelic play some old and new tunes. It had been several months since both bands were at the Visulite and everybody was ready to jam. The scene inside was busy as the merchandise tables were filled with merch and the guys behind the table making it all happen were very entertaining. Before the show, I had the opportunity to hang out backstage with the guys and observe them as they prepare for the show. If you consider constant shenanigans and pranks prepping for a show, then sign me up! You can really feel the love these guys have for each other and the close bond they share.]
The night started off with a little Captain Yum Yum, the side project of members from Of Good Nature and Simplified which includes Cameron Brown, Clee Laster, Chris Sheridan and Joey Vacone. Yes that’s right…Captain Yum Yum! Before the set, I asked Sheridan who in the world came up with the name of the band, and as I looked at him with this smile on my face, I said man, that’s such a cool and fun name!
He looked at me with a thumbs up and said “that’s exactly the emotion we want to convey with our songs…let’s have some fun!” It turns out the name is the product of delirium on a long trip to a Florida gig. Go figure! They played 6 songs starting with “High Everyday” and ended the set with “Wake Up Tomorrow.”
Second set to hit the stage was Tropidelic. I was excited to see them because it would be my first time ever seeing them play. I would describe their style of music as playful and energetic, almost like a mini Mardi Gras on stage, when you see them kicking their feet high in the air dancing and singing.
With front man Matthew Road’s soulful voice mixed with the rap skills of James Begin, giving the people a combination of funk and reggae, with a splash funky bass and of course, you’ve got to have a horns section Derek McBryde (trumpet) and James Begin (trombone) and heart pounding drum beats from Darrick Willis to round everything out. It’s one big party when they start playing, with everyone’s hands in the air and dancing all around.
Their new album Heavy is the Head is coming out on November 10th and their new single “Leviathan” is now streaming on Spotify. Make sure to check it out and add to your playlist.
The final set of the evening, from Of Good Nature, hit the stage and again, the crowd was out of their seats as I knew they would be.
The band consists of Cameron Brown as lead singer (guitar), Joey Vachon (Percussion), Jon Reed (bass), Brandon Hucks (trombone) and David Hamilton Jr. (drums).
They started with “Life Worth Living” and everyone starts to sway back and forth with hands in the air. Then all of a sudden, the beat picks up and you’re jumping around and dancing again. Everybody was having a great time singing and dancing and a few drinks got knocked out of some hands but, it was all good. I heard one lady say to another when she bumped into her while dancing, “oops…I’m so sorry, let me buy you a drink! I’m just having such a terrific time, I lost control on the floor.”
The other lady declined and said no problem, we’re all here to party and have a good time, that’s what this night is all about.
Then halfway through the set they played their iTunes reggae hit single for 2017 “Sit Around” with Zach Fowler, frontman for Sun-Dried Vibes. Of course once the set was over, the fans chanted “one more song” for about a minute, then they all came back out and played for the encore Papa Kohlly. Both bands are on tour. Below is a list of upcoming tour dates. Be sure to catch a show at a venue in your city.
