It’s with a heavy heart to write that there was an incident at Smokey Joe’s Cafe/Bar on Briar Creek Road in the Chantilly area of Charlotte Saturday evening around 11:30 pm. The short is a man was randomly shot while attending the Monty Mak and Barcerado show at the venue.

Resulting in the victim to be pronounced dead at the scene by medics. For now, it’s being labeled as a random act of violence. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are conducting it as a homicide investigation.

Authorities reported the victim was standing in the patio area at the time of the shooting and was struck by an errant bullet.

Initial police investigation reveals an unknown suspect fired multiple bullets into the parking lot and building of the bar. The victim was in this area and was the only one struck. Officials said when police arrived on scene, they found an adult male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Medic’s responded and pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

CMPD offered no motive for the shooting and did not have any feedback if the victim was the shooter’s intended target. There are no suspects at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to call 704-432-TIPS or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or visit  Crime Stoppers.

Smokey Joe’s is back open for business today. They are celebrating New Year’s Eve for people who Hate New Year’s Eve with some good homegrown rock-and-roll with The Willie Douglas Band tonight. Tomorrow is $10 cover charge and free champagne at midnight (until it runs out) and the musical stylings of Jamorah. Hugs or a warm friendly face would be welcome during this time.

Our thoughts are with the staff at Smokey Joe’s, the victim, his family, and friends.

*will update with info as it’s made available.

Update:

They have identified the victim as 47 year old military veteran John Songer.

Police arrested Jamie Lord Harris, a known criminal and charged him with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was released from prison in 2017 after 10 years incarceration for a murder that happened in 2005. To add to this creeps sheet he also attacked and robbed an 80-year-old woman when she left her physical therapy appointment on Randolph Road.

Officials said Harris is being held without bond on murder charges and will make his first court appearance Wednesday.
